Master of Wine: Yasmeen Jansen,
Yasmeen Jansen MW is a specialist medical practitioner, and the development of her expertise in wine began with her involvement in tasting groups with colleagues. Her love affair with wine was cemented when she lived in Italy for two years, during which time she developed an affinity for, and in-depth knowledge of, Italian wines. Yasmeen's passion is for wine education and appreciation, and this has inspired her MW journey. Tastings led by Yasmeen are fun and informative and involve a deeper exploration of the varieties and regions covered.
The Master of Wine qualification indicates that the title recipient has completed the toughest series of examinations on viticulture, wine making styles and techniques, all wine regions, and all pluses and minuses in the marketing of these wines on planet. Then added to this is the requirement for an extraordinary ability to discern the bouquet & flavour nuances caused by the factors above which indicate the wine’s variety, age, wine making techniques used, regions, quality, hygiene and seasonal variations. The title MW is the greatest imprimatur or recognition that the wine world can give to its most able students. After 50 years of Master of Wine graduates there are just 2 in Western Australia and perhaps 24 in Australia.

2019 Cascina Luisin Asili Barbaresco Nebbiolo
The 2019 Barbaresco Asili is fabulous. Crushed flowers, mint, herbs, licorice, macerated cherry, spice and sweet pipe tobacco all grace this exquisite, classically built Barbaresco from the famed Asili vineyard. Floral and earthy notes extend the perfumed finish effortlessly. (Drink between 2025-2034)

2020 Luigi Giordano Barbaresco 'Cavanna'
65-year-old vines. Importer: Vinify Wine Co. Red fruit, almond, pretty florals and tea leaf, a little stony and spicy. Medium-bodied, fresh, red fruits with a tangerine flavour, fine dusty tannin, really nice and bright, with a gently peppery finish of excellent length. Lovely. A lot of energy. 2018 Revello Barolo 'Giachini' Nebbiolo
Lots of fruit and nutty character to this. Medium-bodied with tight, lightly firm tannins and a savory, mineral finish. Nicely concentrated and focused, but needs time to expand. Try from 2024.

2020 Gaja Dagromis Barolo
Red berry hue. Crushed cherry, rose petal and hot slate aromatics. Dark cherry fruit fills on entry with lift of red florals carried by fine acidity. It rolls into a deeper and savoury mid palate with dark spices, black stone and wood shavings all apparent. Tannins firmly grip but don’t clip, so the finish is very long, detailed and precise.

2017 La Spinetta Barbaresco Gallina
A beautiful, focused red with intensity and brilliance, showing cherry, watermelon, truffle and mushroom aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and refined. Long finish. Try after 2023.

2018 Marchesi di Grésy Barbaresco Camp Gros Riserva
Fresh and floral with orange peel, crab apples, and cranberries. Flowers. Full-bodied with a very fine line of tannins through the center palate. Lovely texture. Persistent finish. Power with elegance. Gorgeous now but will age beautifully. An excellent example of this fresh and fine vintage. Better after 2026.

2018 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin
Super concentrated and super-focused red-berry and oaky-vanilla character on the nose. Medium-bodied with very fine, firm tannin. The deep, pristine core of fruit pushes through. Give it time to even out. Drink from 2024.

2015 Vietti Barolo Castiglione
Plenty of perfume here with abundant roses and violets, as well as spice-dusted red cherries and hints of orange rind. The palate has depth and density with a sense of power and detail to the tannins. Long, dense and fresh.

2012 Massolino Barolo Margheria
The 2012 Barolo Margheria is lifted and precise, with a real sense of crystalline purity. A host of floral and savory notes open up in the glass. The 2012 is an especially refined, polished Serralunga Barolo long on class. Today the flavors are bright and nicely articulated throughout. The long, creamy finish only adds to the wine’s considerable appeal. (Drink between 2020–2032)

2008 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Nei Cannubi
The 2008 Barolo Nei Cannubi is striking. Freshly cut flowers, mint, spices and sweet red cherries are woven together in a rich, luxurious tapestry of undeniable class. The balance of richness and finesse is fabulous. Silky, polished tannins are barely perceptible, such is the elegance of the fruit. In 2008 the Cannubi is sumptuous, elegant, and flat-out beautiful. 1997 Gaja Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo
This was my fourth bottle with friends in Hong Kong during my birthday last week. The 1997 vintage was a great one for Gaja, and he made rich and structured single-vineyard wines. It was the first year that he started using Langhe DOC instead of the Barbaresco DOCG appellation, a mistake in my opinion, but that’s another column. This bottle showed greatness as always with aromas of dried fruits, mushrooms and eucalyptus. It was full-bodied with integrated tannins and a long and intense finish. Minerals and spices came through as an aftertaste, and the flavors went on for minutes. The wine is just coming around now. Decant before serving.
