Larry Cherubino / Owner & Winemaker
Raised in the Swan Valley, Larry began his journey in wine while studying agriculture, taking on a vintage as a cellar hand at Houghton, Australia’s third-oldest winery. Captivated by the experience, he deferred his studies to spend several years working vintages across Europe and back at Houghton, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. After earning a double major in agribusiness and horticulture, Larry pursued oenology at Roseworthy College, graduating in 1996. His early career took him to Hardy ’s Tintara in South Australia, where he developed his understanding of wine styles, followed by extensive travel to iconic wine regions like Tuscany, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Loire. Returning to Western Australia, Larry rejoined Houghton, rising to senior winemaker and regional manager for BRL Hardy. During his tenure, he introduced 30 new wines, including the Gladstones Cabernet, and selected vine clones tailored to WA’s conditions, focusing on flavour and tannin quality. In 2003, Larry left Houghton to offer vine-to-wine consultancy services worldwide. His years of experience, thousands of kilometres travelled, and deep connections to small West Australian family vineyards culminated in the founding of Larry Cherubino Wines in 2005. What began with the modest release of ‘Ad Hoc’ and ‘The Yard’ has since grown into a celebrated portfolio, including labels like Ovale, Laissez Faire, and Pedestal. Today, Cherubino owns vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton, and the Great Southern, producing wines that reflect the best of these regions. ‘Great winemaking starts in the vineyard, ’ Larry says—a philosophy that continues to shape his work as a winemaker and consultant.

The award-winning and family-owned Western Australian business was established in 2005, by Larry and his wife Edwina, and is now astutely recognised as one of Australia’s most successful and innovative wine producers.
Larry and Edwina purchased their first parcel of land in 2004 in
Frankland River, where Edwina grew up. The Cherubino brand was
brought to life the following year with the release of one wine – from
their spare room. Fast forward a few years and the Cherubinos jumped at the chance to purchase the neighbouring vineyard as well as several acres of prime river and vineyard country. Their Riversdale vineyard is now considered one of the best in the state.Since those early years, the range of wines has grown and has
received a variety of accolades from respected wine critics such
as James Halliday as well as various medals and trophies along the way.The Cherubino range includes wines such as Ad Hoc Hen & Chicken

Beautiful, just beautiful. Intense aromas of lemon zest and bath salts lift immediately on the nose. The fruit is sourced from the two best blocks on the Riversdale Vineyard. The palate has a crunchy vibrancy with a lively flow that bounces off the slaty wet pebble character. Precise and pure with tremendous cellaring potential.
2025 Cherubino Great Southern Riesling

This excellent riesling comes from three vineyards – Riversdale, Acacia and Justin. There’s a bracing tension here, evident initially on the nose with the minerally flinty characters and then on the palate, where it is so precise and finely focused. Has just a slight bath salts edge adding to the finish.

2024 Cherubino Ovale Gingin Chardonnay

It captures so much of the character that is the Gingin clone from Wilyabrup. It's made along similar lines to the other chardonnays in this range, but it demonstrates the clonal influence and the regional character. There's a lemon meringue and subtle peachy nectar and stone fruit combination on the nose, and the palate has a creamier, richer texture, albeit still crafted to be fine and expressive of the variety. There's a little of that sea spray nuance, adding another level of complexity. Another powerful statement of Margaret River Gingin clone chardonnay.
2024 Cherubino Ovale Dijon Chardonnay

This is made using specifically the Dijon clone, and it comes from the Wychwood Vineyard in Karridale. So even in what was a fairly warm year, it's with cooler fruit, and so there's a fineness about it. Whole bunch of pressing was used before it went into a mix of new and one-year-old oak barrels for about 10 months. It's quite fine and delicate, yet it's Margaret River, so there's power and characters of quince paste and butterscotch with some nice spicy minerality and a steely thread. All comes together to focus and define this excellent wine.
2025 Cherubino Margaret River Chardonnay

Brings together fruit from the best blocks within the sub-regions of Karridale and Wilyabrup in Margaret River. Typically, handpicked and whole-bunch pressed before fermentation in a new and one-year-old French oak combination for just eight months. There's power and complexity here, evident immediately on the nose and reinforced on the palate. Quince, crème brûlée, and lemon-meringue aromas swirl through a highly aromatic opening, and then on the palate there's a richness and concentrated depth that gathers before driving through to a long, sustained finish with a final lick of minerality. It's a terrific wine.
2024 Cherubino Black Label Pemberton Chardonnay

The 2024 Pemberton Chardonnay is rich, toasty and nutty on the nose, with notes of brûlée top, flambéed peach, cashews, lemon oil and white peach. The acidity on the palate is scintillating and serves to sensationally balance the opulence of the fruit. This is easily the best Pemberton Chardonnay I have seen from Cherubino, something I would not have predicted given some of the challenges of the hot, dry season. There's not a skerrick of that to be seen here. This is utterly superb! 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Expressive, flashy aromas of lemon peel, salted nuts, oyster shells, grapefruit, pastry and flint. The tightly wound palate is balanced with a textural, rounded, midweight mouthfeel that leads into a mouthwatering finish. There's a great reductive edge here with underlying power and real mineral tension. 100% Gingin clone.

2021 Cherubino Riversdale Cabernet Blend

This is a Bordeaux blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, petit verdot and cabernet franc from the Frankland River. It was generally a cooler vintage, and yet in the Great Southern things worked out pretty well. This is a cracking good wine, seamlessly woven together and laced with fine tannins and cleverly managed oak. It was made in micro detail with handpicking before optical berry sorting to get the best fruit. And then it was matured in French oak foudres, which has contributed to its elegance and refinement.
2021 Cherubino Riversdale Merlot Cabernet Franc

Deep garnet to tile-red colour; the aromas are also showing some evolution with attractive red fruit, rose and blood orange aromas; a hint of creosote from development. The wine is generously fruited and supple, mellowing gracefully now and showing some tertiary complexities. Lovely wine, starting to drink really well, but with years ahead of it.

Here's a wine that expresses so much about the Riversdale Vineyard and Frankland River. Loads of blackcurrant fruit, ironstone, liqueur cherry and dark chocolate provide a compelling aromatic beginning, then the palate reveals power, concentration and balance. The astute, restrained use of oak allows the fruit quality to shine. That touch of savoury ironstone, almost rusty nail, on the palate offsets the darker fruit characters perfectly. Exceptional wine.
2019 Cherubino Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon

A glorious example of Frankland cabernet. The varietal notes of blackcurrant and a little black olive are beautifully infiltrated by that regional ironstone character. The palate is a powerhouse with a firm core of new and one-year-old oak working with the firm chalky tannins to carry effortlessly through to a sustained finish. Still quite tight at the moment but extended cellaring will see something special.
2012 Cherubino Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon

This has the best crimson-purple colour of its Great Southern and Margaret River siblings, heralding a wine with exceptional varietal purity and focus, fine-grained tannins woven through its full-bodied black fruits, oak playing a less obvious role than it does in the other two wines. This is for the Bordeaux purist with intense patience.
