The 2022 Henschke Release in Context

The Henschke family’s anticipated 2022 Single Vineyard Collection from the Eden Valley was released globally on Wednesday, 6 May 2026. This distinguished collection includes 2022 Hill of Grace Shiraz, Hill of Roses Shiraz, Mount Edelstone Shiraz, The Wheelwright Shiraz, Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon and Hill of Peace Semillon.
The 2022 vintage, according to fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke, is one ‘graced by belief’ and celebrates the pioneering vision of fourth-generation winemaker Cyril Henschke.
“It was my father’s belief in the inherent quality of the Eden Valley and its single-vineyard expressions that gave us first Mount Edelstone and, from his heritage, the eloquently named Hill of Grace. It is easy to imagine his wonder as his first harvest of Mount Edelstone arrived at the winery in 1952, releasing the magic of the then forty-year-old shiraz vines during fermentation, an exquisite perfume of florals, spice, pepper, sage and rich red and black fruit. “Now, 70 years later, with the release of the 2022 vintage, Mount Edelstone has become one of the country’s longest consecutively produced single-vineyard wines and an integral part of Australia’s fine wine history,” says Stephen.
Cyril’s second single-vineyard wine, the 1958 Hill of Grace, was a tiny production from a pocket of ancient shiraz vines tended by his forebears, watched over by the Gnadenberg Church. At the time of its first vintage, the vines planted by his maternal great-grandfather, Nicolaus Stanitzki, were nearing 100 years of age.
Stephen and his wife Prue, a highly regarded botanist, environmentalist and viticulturist, became the custodians of Cyril’s vineyards and vision, carrying on his legacy with the creation of four new single-vineyard, single-varietal wines: Cyril Henschke, Hill of Roses, The Wheelwright and Hill of Peace.
Over the past four decades, Stephen’s meticulous work in the winery, combined with Prue’s constant drive to improve soil and vine health, canopy management and fruit quality across their vineyards, through regenerative viticulture and organic and biodynamic principles, has delivered a fresh depth and intensity to the Henschke wines. Their passion for a more sustainable way of living seeks to restore balance to the natural environment, regenerate vineyard ecosystems and minimise harmful impacts to the earth.
“The 2022 vintage was mild, resulting in a late vintage, with harvest dates one to two weeks later than the historical average. Reminiscent of the high-quality vintages of 1991, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2015, the 2022 single-vineyard wines show wonderful ageing potential and will reward long-term cellaring under ideal conditions,” says Prue.
The 2022 Single Vineyard Collection will be available exclusively under the Stelvin screw cap closure, with four years of maturation in bottle. Henschke sources locally made Stelvin closures and bottles to reduce its impact on the environment, while ensuring the quality and consistency of the wines’ long-term ageing potential.
“Our family is honoured to share this collection from a milestone vintage, honouring my father Cyril’s first single-vineyard creation with the 70th anniversary release of Mount Edelstone. These wines speak faithfully of their place, with elegance, distinction and enduring beauty,” adds Stephen.

First bracket
2025 Henschke Julius Riesling
"Pale straw in the glass with a flash of green and beautifully defined aromas of freshly squeezed lime juice, green apple, Bickford's lime cordial and grapefruit. You'll find hints of crushed quartz, Christmas lily, orange blossom, almond paste, ozone, lemongrass and makrut lime. Sleek, focused and wonderfully pure. There is an ache of precision and minerality that marks its passage over the palate, all tension and velocity and cadence. Jeez,...

2008 Henschke Julius Riesling [Museum Release]
A fine, subtle and finely layered riesling that initially appears quite fragile before revealing the full extent of its texture, length and depth. A delicate perfume of minerals, lime juice and lemon zest precedes an elegant, restrained palate whose fresh flavours of white peach, pear and apple are supported by a fine chalkiness. It finishes very dry and savoury.

2024 Henschke The Nurturer Carignan blend
Named in honour of Prue Henschke, viticulturist, environmentalist and botanist, this wine perhaps is a next step into the future for the Henschke team given their long-play with Rhônish-style wines such as Johann’s Garden and Henry’s Seven. The detail is important: there are seven varieties here all with similar southern French callings, in volumetric order 22% Carignan, 19% Counoise, 17% Grenache Gris, 15% Grenache Noir, 11% Clairette, 9% Cinsault and bringing up the rear 7% Shiraz. If you reckon that’s crazy enough, now consider each was added in sequence as they were harvested into the one single ferment, all up over 15 days. The wine is lighter in colour, alcohol and weight that its Henschke siblings, with a focus on fragrant red fruit and dusted minerality, bright berry juiciness and tang, light in tannin, grounded with a crushed fresh thyme note. While all the winemaking technicals will thrill the geeks, the sipping is a pure joy to the senses. Winemaker Gwyn Olsen told me “it was so fun to make”. Happily, it’s just as much fun to drink.

2022 Henschke Cyril Cabernet Sauvignon [New Release]
"This is a wine to make you fall in love with cabernet sauvignon and its secret weapon: tannin.... They arrive in the wine with intent, a conduit for the delivery of intense, concentrated black fruits, dark plums with ripe dark roasting spices layered across earth, leaf, sage and undergrowth. Tannins run long and deep but, gracefully so, contributing elegance to the wine. Beautifully finished and crafted."

Lots going on here with crushed black fruits, thyme and herbs. I love the savoury earthy note here along with a tar note, plums and a wonderful depth of fruit. A very long finish with a graphite tinge creeping in.

A very expressive nose with intense fruit making a strong impression. Aromas of blackberries, blueberries and dark cherries lead to sage and spice notes. This has a very plush palate with boldly fleshy fruit, delivered in a rich, layered mode. Blueberries, red plums and blackberries and a very concentrated, intense finish. This is an impressive edition of this wine. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

"Heady, composed", settled, integrated aromas soar out of the glass. Sweet palate entry with a note of dried grasses. There's a little leather, too. This seems like a wine you could enjoy already. It leaves a wonderfully soothing trace in the throat, and lasts for several minutes! There is real freshness and delicacy here.

“Great depth of flavour and concentration but also supreme elegance and harmony. The balance is so impressive in such a young Edelstone. There are lashings of tannins but they are lovely supple, fine-grained tannins, in perfect harmony with the wine. An exceptional vintage indeed.”

“This is a beautiful wine, and one of the most lovely Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shirazes I have tasted on release. I love the wines from the 2022 vintage; it may forever live in the shadow of the great 2021 vintage that came before it, but not in my heart.”

“May well be the prettiest Hill of Grace yet released. May also be the best, and that’s saying something. I thought 2021 was the greatest yet, then came 2022. … The depth and intensity of fruit that comes from vines that were planted in the 1860s is undeniable, but it’s all harnessed and focused into an effortless, long, and most graceful structure.”
99+ Points - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot
“The 2022 Hill of Grace Shiraz leads with dark fruit and an abundance of exotic spice to match.…I love the 2022 vintage. It is fresh and detailed.…The allure of it now is not in question, either.”
99 Points - Erin Larkin, Rober Parker Wine Advocate
A wine with a stored wisdom and depth of character, revealed by its marriage of dark berried fruit and exotic spices, a sophisticated ease of stature and balance of flavour, fruit drive, structure and volume, with underlying power and energy yet surprisingly fresh and vibrant. Completely in its own zone with a view to staying alive and exciting for many, many years.”
